EASY/MEDIUM WEDNESDAY WALK - GLENBURN HERITAGE SITE, KOWEN FOREST - 2 JULY 2025 (BBC)
**No bookings required for joint club Wednesday Walks** This Easy to Medium graded walk will be led by Dave Abela (0482 802 050) on behalf of the Brindabella Bushwalking Club. Shortly after the first European settlement of Queanbeyan in the 1820’s, Luke and Mary Colverwell (both freed convicts), established a farm about 10kms outside of Queanbeyan and raised their large family. These were the beginnings of the locality of Glenburn, which grew into a small village community by the late 1800’s. By the early 1900’s though, it gradually faded away, mainly due to the ravages of drought and rabbits. Today, there are still many ruins from that time including some of the cottages, plantings, graves, farm machinery and small mines. Our loop walk will take us around these sites, with many interesting information plaques along the way, providing excellent information and stories about the early European history of this area. This is an easy 12km walk with gentle hills, mostly on fire trails with some sections of loose rocks. Some nice views over the upper Molonglo River too! Climb: 200m. Distance: 12 km. Total overall ascent: 250m BBC Grade: Easy (7). Map: Bungendore 1: 25000 Weather for Wednesday: A shower or two, 1-11 deg. Cars: 17km, $2 per passenger. Meet at 8:45am for a 9am start in the Spotlight Queanbeyan carpark opposite Red Rooster (roundabout at cnr. of Yass and Bungendore Roads) Return by mid afternoon Those doing their first Wednesday Walk must contact the leader to discuss the level of difficulty of the walk. There is a mailing list for Wednesday Walks. CBC Members wanting to go on this list can write to wednesday.walks'at'canberrabushwalkingclub.org (replacing 'at' by '@')
