Rob Roy Nature Reserve

Rob Roy Nature Reserve

Walk

This walk is for club members only. Primary aim of this hike is to complete mapping out of a new loop route. Starting in the north, we head S/W along foot pads until entering the reserve proper. We head off-trail to the SE and follow a series of gullies and spurs ascending our first knoll. We descend SE until we briefly join the Lance Bates Track. We go off-trail crossing a creek line to begin our steep ascent to the ridge line of the reserve, along a series of spurs and knolls that does a long arch to the south west where we meet up with the Rob Roy Eco Track. We leave this track soon after and head off trail descending a steep spur to our West to join an existing fire trail. After a brief respite from off trail walking we head off trail again along spurs, gullies and knolls to return to the start. The walk will be predominately off-trail, criss-crossing the undulating landscape with some very steep sections and rocky/grassy slopes that are slippery and/or unstable under foot with varying thickness of vegetation from open woody grasslands to moderate-thick scrub. Walking pole(s) and gloves might be useful at times and gaiters and/or long pants a must to protect legs. Due to the nature of the terrain, length of the walk and elevation gain/loss this walk will be strenuous and best suited for walkers with a high level of fitness, comfortable off track and in the last month have hiked regularly and completed successfully at least one hike equivalent to a club grading of medium/medium.
