Medium-Hard Wednesday Walk, 12 August, The Mitten and other Granite Tors

The Mitten is the name that I have for an impressive granite tor that, arguably, looks like a ... mitten! It is sequested in the bush to the east of the old Orroral Valley geodetic observatory and the regular Granite Tors walking track. The mitten theme sounds appropriate for a winter walk in chilly weather.

Given the poor prognosis of the Wednesday weather forecast for off-track walking, this walk will only be partially off track. Starting from the Orroral Homestead carpark we will walk steeply off-track up to The Mitten and then to the observatory. After the observatory, we will proceed down to the Orroral picnic ground by the regular Granite Tors track and then back to Lanyon Homestead carpark via a short car shuffle.

The off-track section of this walk will be steep and rough and is likely to be wet after days of rain, but it has been curated to include sections of quite lovely bush.

Only fit, off-track walkers should present for this walk. Walkers should bring gaiters, eye-protection, wet-weather gear, gloves (and/or mittens?).

Distance: 8 km in 5.5 hours, vertial distance of about 500m

Weather forecast for Canberra for Wednesday as of Saturday afternoon is for 0-12 degrees and a shower or two.

Grading: Medium/Rough (CBC), 10 (BBC)

Transport: Meet at Lanyon Marketplace, behind Maccas, at 8:20 for an 8:30 departure. From there we will organise shared transport to the Orroral picnic ground with a suggestion of $10 per passenger ($30 per car).
