This is a three week walking extravaganza on NZ’s South Island exploring some of its most scenic walking tracks. The trip consists of 3 main walks, all staying in huts, which I have pre-booked for a group of 12. I have also pre-booked all of the bus shuttles and most of the accommodations. Cost is $1865, plus other incidentals
From Christchurch, we’ll start with the Banks Peninsula Track, near Akaroa. This is a 3 day coastal walk along cliff tops and forests with a (1.5 hr) kayaking option to visit the penguin and seal colonies in the Pohatu Marine Reserve.
After this, we will make our way to Te Anau over three days where we will have time to do a few of the South Islands’ most highly rated short walks in the mountain regions.
With Te Anau as our home base, our second main walk will be NZ’s newest “Great Walk”, the Hump Ridge track. This 3 day trek starts by walking along the South Islands’ most southern beaches. The well groomed track then sends us high into the mountains for sweeping views of the wild and very remote south coast.
Some rest time back in Te Anau is then followed by an “out and back” 7 day traverse of the Hollyford Valley. We will walk the full length of this stunning valley in Fiordland NP all the way to the west coast, then re-trace our steps (with a few changes) back to the start.
SOME IMPORTANT THINGS TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE CONSIDERING JOINING THIS TRIP:
- You must have previous mult-day walking experience carrying a 10 to 13kg fullpack in harsh weather conditions. Expect the possibility of heavy rain, cold and windy conditions, walking through mud and shallow creeks, over fallen trees, sandflies, long ascents/descents, suspension bridges and wire-rope bridges.
- Day 1 of the Hump Ridge walk consists of a 20km walking distance with an ascent of 1000 metres.
- The Hollyford Valley walk has a total distance of 130kms over 7 days.
For a detailed itenary, let me know and I will send you all of the details and breakdown of costs.
