Ready for a challenge that will give your quads, hammies and glutes plenty of exercise? Enjoy amazing views that you'll never see lower down? Then join me on one of the more challenging walks in the new Mindjagari Track.

From Fishing Gap car park, we’ll walk around 5 km up Fishing Gap Road (gravel fire trail). This trail winds around a fair bit and has a couple of steep sections but is easily managed, if done at a sensible pace - which is what we'll do. After climbing ~ 300 vertical metres the real fun begins as we test our legs on the climb up, over a few fallen logs & stray bits of twigs, dodging rocks & tackling some footholds of loose soil. We'll also get to appreciate the newly cut timber steps which will make our climb easier. We'll stop regularly, to catch our breath & admire the changes in the bush as we ascend through the layers of forest that make Tidbinbilla so special. If we're lucky we'll hear lyrebirds practicing their repertoire.

At the top, there’s a lovely open area where the views will have you taking photos nonstop. This is also where we'll have a break, a cuppa & a snack before we tackle the optional climb to the top, an additional 100 vertical metres rock scramble with some mild exposure. You'll need your hands for this shortish section, which is only about 800 metres in distance, but you'll be able to leave your poles at the saddle before we start and pick them up on the way back.

Please wear long trousers and/or gaiters and shoes with decent grip.

Terrain information

Easy fire trail to start and end with but the footpad to the top has often got some fallen logs and stray bits of twigs. There will be rocks to dodge, some loose soil, and a few newly-cut timber steps. It's steepish in sections and this is where hiking poles come in handy. There's a short rock scramble at the top. Shoes with decent grip are recommended.
