I need to confirm dates and viability (Should know by 23 May), but am putting this on people's radar early.
A 5 or 6 day trip walking 60 to 80 km over 3-4 days in the Murray Sunset National Park in Victoria, south of Mildura. This is a near desert environment, flat, sandy and dry. It is a bit of a 4wd mecca, however, our path is primarily walking track only, so we should be mostly on our own.
Some of the highlights of the walk include:
- Emus, goats, kangaroos
- Possibility of wild flowers (We are probably going to be too early, but who knows)
- (Hopefully) clear dark skies to see the stars
- Walking in a remote desert environment; and
- Climbing Mt Crozier (just 111m above sea level, but hey, that is still 50m above the surrounding terrain)
Day 1 - drive ten hours to Lake Becking camping area. We may walk five KM to get a start on day 2.
Day 2 - 22 km to the Mt Jess campsite (Less if we make a start the day before).
Day 3 - 18 km to Mount Crozier, possibly camping on top of Mt Crozier.
Day 4 and optional day 5 - up to 17 km per day back to Lake Becking campsite, via an alternate return if we go for six days.
Final day - drive another ten hours back home.
You are welcome to bring younger walkers, you will just need to sign an acknowledgement of risks before we start and reach out when you book yourself in to get them registered.
You will need to be fit, well prepared, and had previous overnight bushwalking experience. You will need to carry at least 5 litres of water, there are no reliable natural water sources on this walk, we are totally reliant on Vic Parks topping up a small number of water tanks along the route that may be empty. Also, remember that this is a desert environment in winter, and below freezing temperatures a possibility.
Sunrise about 7.30am - Sun set around 5.30 pm. Half moon
A multi day backpacking or base-camping activity.
