Keith Joliffe is a Koala (Gula) volunteer for the Conservation Council ACT Region, with prior experience in habitat work from the Eurobodalla Koala Project. He collaborates with ANU Fenner School and ACT Government researchers to study the viability of ACT woodlands as wild Koala habitat. A key part of their work involves public education, and they appreciate engagement with groups like CBC and similar community organisations.
In September, Keith will come and talk to us:
- the status of wild Koalas (Gula) in the ACT, focusing on the viability of woodlands as their habitat. It was prompted by a Koala sighting at the Jacka Stage 2 development site in October 2024;
- discuss the ACT Government's Conservation Strategy for Koalas, exploring options like reviving wild populations, establishing more sanctuaries, translocations, or continued monitoring;
- outline the study's methods (GIS mapping, document searches, and ground-truthing plot surveys) and emphasise public education.
- Finally, it will detail how bushwalkers can contribute by identifying suitable tree species, recognising scats and scratches, and using platforms like NatureMapR, iNaturalist, and a dedicated Facebook group to report sightings.
The Zoom will be available too, please signup, the Zoom link and meeting details will be available at Message Board.
