The Overland Track in Winter 2025

Walk, Back-pack

Expressions of interest for a late winter trip of The Overland Track going South to North in September 2025. At this stage the itinerary would be track transport from Launceston early morning to Lake St Clair. Catch Ferry from LSC to Narcissus hut and walk into Pine Valley Hut. Two nights Pine Valley Hut exploring what we can. Kia Ora Hut (Long Day). Pelion Hut via Mt Ossa/Pelion East (Long day). New Pelion Hut two nights, rest day with option to climb Mount Oakleigh. Windermere Hut (Long Day). Waterfall Valley Hut (Short day). Scott Kilvert Hut via Barn Bluff (Long Day). Dove lake transport to Launceston. The trip is still very much in draft form but the above is 8 nights out and 9 days walking. Clearly, very good equipment is needed as rain, cold, snow, wind and icy track are all possible which makes it all the more adventurous and will of course limit what we can climb and do. A winter trip has more hazards and risks than at other times of the year. All the climbs have a scramble and boulders to the summit and are dangerous with snow or wet conditions so we will have to take it as it comes. All side trips are optional. A late winter trip gives us a good chance at minimal snow coverage. We will use the huts when it suits us but we do need to carry a three season tent each just in case. Happy to discuss experience and gear needs.
Group costs will include transport from Launceston to LSC, Ferry service, then transport from Dove Lake back to Launceston. With a group of six we can pretty much book each section with our own timetable. Each person will need to have their own Tasmania Parks Pass. At this time of year there is no track fee for the Overland Track and it can be walked in this direction from 1 June until 30 September.

Terrain information

Lots of up and down and can be very exposed especially at Pelion Gap and crossing the plateau from Waterfall Valley down to Scott Kilvert Hut.

Transport information

I will make bookings for track transport from Launceston to Lake St Clair, Ferry booking and return transport to Launceston from Dove Lake. Preliminary inquires have the Ferry at $55 and the road transport into LSC and back to Launceston is around $180 per person. There are only a couple of track transport companies that operate in winter.

Accommodation information

We could meet up and all stay in a backpackers or similar in Launceston both before and after the trip. Lots of options but we should all meet at one designated departure spot. I have stayed at the Tasmania Backpackers in Launceston and it is very comfortable. Open to suggestions and still a work in progress. Because we want transport on specific days and times I would be keen to arrange this several months in advance and get the times we want, hence the early booking deadline.

A multi day backpacking or base-camping activity.
