Currowan Creek and Falls
Sun 02nd Mar 2025
We will attempt a through walk where we exploit a horseshoe feature in Currowan Ck to explore the upper and mid sections of the creek staying as much as possible on National Park/Crown land. We leave a car near the gate on Mount Budawang Road and another on Budawang Road. From Budawang Road, we head to Currowan Ck (around 1km) and then head downstream 1.5km to take a look at the magnificent Currowan Falls from above. We then retrace our steps 1.5km to a bend in the Ck and head back upstream a little further to see if a lovely strand of tree ferns is still standing. From this area, I'd like to see if we can cut east across a ridge to Currowan Ck (190m climbing, 40m descent). If we succeed it's around 2-3km back to the other car. However, this section may possibly be thick with regrowth and we may have to beat a retreat. All of the walk is off track and largely exploratory for the leader since the 2019/20 fires. Because we will be in the creek most of the time there will be wet feet and rockhopping on slippery rocks. Away from the creek it will be thick bush and scrub. Participants need to be experienced at this type of off track walking, reasonably fit and suitably prepared to cope with whatever the terrain might throw at us. Please read the details of the activity before signing up.
The group will meet at Braidwood before proceeding to the start of the walk. Car pooling is available from meetup spots in north and south Canberra.
(Nb this trip has been rescheduled from October 2024 and revised to be focused on exploring Currowan Ck. The start and finish times do not include driving to the walk.)
