New & rusty pack hikers trip*. Namadgi NP (full, waitlist started)
Sat 12th Oct 2024
Walk, Back-pack, Social
Are you looking to return to overnight hiking after a long break away from it, or curious to try it out? Got a moderate level of fitness and want to stretch the legs? This might be the event for you.
Depending on ACT Parks maintenance schedule (Westermans Hut is currently 'closed until further notice'), we will either:
- From Brayshaw's Homestead carpark, walk the Settler's Track (9km circuit) with day packs. After this, return to the vehicles and swap packs for overnight bags, then backtrack the 2km to Westermans Homestead to spend the night. Good campsites at the homestead are fairly limited, and there's always the possibility of other users being out there, hence the trim group size. 13.5km/+270m vertical elevation gain.
Or the backup option:
- Departing from the Mount Clear carpark, hike to Horse Gully Hut and camp for the evening. 18km return/+401m vertical elevation gain.
Both locations offer nice, flat camp sites, a loo, a sheltered place to cook and to socialise, and entail a moderately demanding walk on excellent to 'pretty good' tracks. DST will have just kicked back in so we have early sunrises and plenty of daylight to work with.
*Places for this event are prioritised to members who are new to overnight hiking or are coming back from absence and looking for a fairly gentle re-entry to it. The focus will be on getting in the swing with pack hiking, tuning gear, and practising our campcraft, all in a friendly and supportive social setting. That said, the trip involves a fair walk and a pack haul, so a moderate level of fitness is required to ensure your own safety and comfort, and that of other participants. Please ensure you have done some walking with a weighted pack in preparation for this event!

Terrain information
Mostly flat to gentle rolling ground. Option 1 has a 90m climb in the first 1.5km, Option 2 has some short but steep sections, mostly on the return leg, close to Horse Gully Hut. Both walks are on good to fair fire trails and footpads. Option 1 may involve some wet/boggy going, mostly around Waterhole Hut, while Option 2 includes three creek crossings, two of these being up to knee deep. Suggest bringing suitable change of footwear for this, or crossing barefoot.
Transport information
Meet 0900 at the Namadgi Visitor Centre. Cars may be left in the main carpark overnight. The main gate is no longer locked in the evening, so please ensure your vehicle and its contents are as secure as can be. Boboyan Road can be very rough going, so from the visitor centre I'd prefer to car pool out in two higher-clearance, ideally AWD, vehicles for the 50 minute drive to the carpark/trailhead. $44 per car. $11pp, based on 8 participants.
Accommodation information
Tent camping. Please ensure you have overnight equipment for a cool spring evening. For members just getting started, the club may be able to assist with gear hire https://canberrabushwalkingclub.org/for-members-guests/equipment-and-food/equipment-hire/ Club gear is limited so please check in with the CBC equipment hire guru, Rob Horsfield, ASAP, equipmentatcanberrabushwalkingclub.org or call 6231 4535 Additionally, we will be able to share some items, such as cooking stoves.
