Walking the Alta Via 1 in the Italian Dolomites, Sept 2024 (Activity now full, waitlist available)

In September 2024, an intrepid group of BBC walkers will be visiting Italy to tackle the Alta Via 1 (AV1). The AV1 is a 121km track across the Dolomites, a dramatic mountain range located in the eastern section of the Italian Alps. The track traverses around incredible jagged peaks, dramatic gorges and beautiful valleys, with a total elevation gain and loss of 7,200 to 8,250m. Our walk will start in the Lago di Braies area on 3 Sept and finish near Belluno nine days later. We will be staying in the mountain huts during the walk, with hotel accommodation immediately prior and afterwards.

Terrain information
We will be following established mountain tracks, some of which were constructed during WWI. While there will be some steep ascents and descents, we will be avoiding any via ferrata (iron road) sections that require specialised equipment. There will, however, be some stretches of steep rocky ground and some narrow and exposed paths. The track is not recommended for anyone with a fear of heights.
Transport information
Each individual in the group will be organising his or her flights and transport to Venice (our meeting place). We have engaged an Italian agency to organise the bookings for the AV1, including accommodation during the walk, and transport to the start point and from the end point.

The accommodation included in the AV1 package includes 2 nights in hotels and 8 nights half board (dinner, bed and breakfast) in mountain huts. We will be organising additional accommodation in Venice for several days prior to commencing the AV1.
A multi day backpacking or base-camping activity with overnight gear required.
