McMillans Walking Track, Victorian Alps
Thu 09th Feb 2023
Walk, Back-pack
NEW TIMING - WAS NOV. 2022. FULLY-BOOKED, WITH A WAITLIST. 13-day east-west traverse of the Victorian Alps on a track/route developed by the Ben Cruachan Walking Club of Gippsland and detailed in a new guidebook by John Chapman (+ 1 reserve day & 2 travel days, i.e. allow a total of 16 days). The track starts at Cobungra, near Omeo, and ends at Woods Point. It passes through the areas of the Dargo, Wonnangatta, Moroka and Macalister Rivers. There are no settlements en route; however, the track is traversed by several remote roads. The intention is to use these roads to place food (and, in some cases, water) caches so that walk participants carry no more than 3 nights’ food at any time. (The leader has made a reconnaissance trip to check these possible cache locations.) If potentially interested in participating, please contact the leader for more information – an itinerary for the walk and a further document with other information, including logistics, will be forwarded to those expressing an interest. With some large ascents and descents involved, participants will require a reasonable level of fitness.

Car-pooling. The current intention is to have two cars travelling from Canberra and two from Melbourne, with cars placed at the beginning and end of the walk. There will be a number of food/water caches placed immediately before commencement of the walk. Aggregate distance travelled by the four cars would be ~5,000km, providing an indicative transport cost of approx. $250 per participant. (Assumes 8 participants.)

Accommodation Information
Tents during the walk. At the end of the walk, the group will travel from Woods Point to Warburton (100km), where they can stay in a holiday cottage that night.
