Medium-Hard Wednesday Walk, 23 Sep, Nursery Hill (NPA)

The walk will be an in-out one to Nursery Hill (1,428m) near Nursery Swamp. We will start from the Nursery Swamp Trail carpark in Orroral Valley then walk about 4.5km along the trail to Nursery Swamp before going offtrack along open, grassy flats for a further 1.5km. After that, we’ll climb about 350m through fairly thick scrub to the summit of Nursery Hill from which, on a good day, you get great views of Mt Mavis, Orroral Hill as well as more distant peaks like Mt Ginini. Return along the same route.

Distance and climb: about 15km return, 480 vertical metres, about 7 to 8 hours

Grading: CBC – Medium/Rough; BBC – 9 Medium; NPA/Aust Walking Grading System – mixed grade 3/5 (3 on-track, 5 off-track)

Terrain: mostly open forest and grassland but the off-track scrub-bashing up to Nursery Hill is through fairly thick and challenging forest for which gaiters and gloves should be brought.

Meet up location: Lanyon Marketplace Shopping Centre (Tharwa Drive, Gordon) carpark near Mc Donalds, departure by 8.00am

Transport: 62km return, $28 per vehicle, $7 per person if 4 in vehicle

Weather forecast: mainly sunny, 20 degrees max, low chance of rain
