Easy/Medium Wednesday Walk #1 Scrivener Dam to Aranda Bushland and Black Mountain NR (BBC)
Wed 15th Apr 2026
Bookings available to active members only.
No bookings required for joint club Wednesday Walks
Leader: Robin Cayzer (0417 238 652)
This walk aims to provide a central low-petrol walk option.
We will start at the Picnic Area carpark on the Lake Burley Griffin shoreline near the National Zoo and Aquarium. From the Zoo we will drop down behind animal enclosures (possibly seeing a giraffe or two) onto the Bicentennial National Trail which follows the Molonglo River until we pass under the Expressway to join the Centenary Trail which we follow through the Arboretum and beyond into the Aranda snow gums, Frost Hollow Walk and Aranda forest trails (interpretive signs and brochures) before passing under Caswell Drive into the Black Mountain Nature Reserve.
We then walk back towards the cars on the Lower Woodland Track and briefly use the bike path tunnels under Parkes Way and the Glenloch Interchange followed by a mix of quieter bike paths and open grassland tracks while enjoying generous lake views.
Distance: 14 km. Total climb: 150m
WEATHER: 4-22 degrees, sunny and no rain
BRING: Morning Tea, Lunch, drinking water, Hat, Sun protection
NOTE WELL!! Two very small sections of this walk are on a much-used bike path – please keep left and move off to left and leave space for any bikes to pass!
MEETING TIME AND PLACE: Meet at 8:15 for an 8:30 departure.
· If you are coming from the south, use Lady Denman Drive, and take the very first right turn after crossing Scrivener Dam.
· If you are coming via the City or from Belconnen, turn off the expressway at the Arboretum and use Lady Denman Drive towards Scrivener Dam, then take the very last turn left before crossing Scrivener Dam; the access road is hard to see so take it slowly once the zoo comes into sight.
Those doing their first Wednesday Walk, and those who are not members of the CBC, BBC or NPA, must contact the leader to discuss the level of difficulty of the walk.
