The De Salis family were the first Europeans to settle in the area back in the 1840’s. We’ll then continue following the riverside track and cross the shallow Gudenb y River, where we can rock hop to the other side. The track takes us fur ther south to the Tharwa Sandwash recreation area and we will continue o n into the Gingerline Nature Reserve, still following the river as we go until the track comes to an end at a nice rocky outcrop. We’ll return the same way, having our lunch stop at the very pleasant Sandwash rest area. After a lunch break we’ll re-trace our footsteps along the river side track and back to our cars at the Tharwa bridge. This is generally a very easy walk, all along well formed trails. I’ve kept it fairly sh ort and shady given the weather forecast. The crossing of Gudgenby River (ankle to knee deep) will involve some rock hopping for a “dry shoe crossing, or taking your shoes off for a sandy barefoot “wet feet” crossing. Either way, you may want bring, water shoes, a small towel or walking poles to assist with your balance. The walk will be no more tha n 10km, with negligible climbing as we’ll be close to the river, all o n track.
