Wednesday Walk: Angle Crossing to Tharwa

** No bookings required for joint club Wednesday Walks **
This walk is an old favourite of mine. Starting from a locked gate north of Angle Crossing we head northward along the Gigerline Nature Reserve. Sticking to the heights above the Murrumbidgee River we largely avoid the Blackberry bushes that have infested much of the river banks. Our route is covered in light to medium scrub and is quite undulating.
Enjoying frequent and very pleasant views of the river and surrounding hills we cross numerous dry and semi-dry creek beds, many of which have quite steep banks. There are also quite a few fence crossings.
We will have lunch at the Tharwa Sandwash picnic area. It has two tables, with seats. Very civilised! From the Sandwash onward the walk is almost always on track. The exception is the Gudgenby River, our last water crossing of the day, and the only one guaranteed to get your boots wet. When checked last Sunday the Gudgenby River level appeared to be around knee height.
After crossing the Gudgenby we very quickly come to the De Salis Cemetery, which can be viewed by the walkers.
From the Cemetery it’s only a short walk on a very well mown path to the big smoke, Tharwa, and our cars. We can then retrieve the vehicles we have left at Angle Crossing.
A good walk for those new to off-track walking.
Note: About three quarters of this walk is off-track.
Walkers who are not members of the BBC, NPA or CBC must contact the walk leader before the walk to discuss the level of difficulty of the walk.
