Snake Awareness
Sat 13th Dec 2025
Bookings available to active members only.
An opportunity to closely observe wild caught venomous snakes of our region to further understand their behaviors to help you to stay safe in their presence when out bushwalking. This unique activity is offered by members of Queanbeyan Wildcare who are very experienced snake handlers. It will be held at the Burra Community Hall, 1 Lagoon Road Burra. It is a very special and limited event. Under supervision and a controlled environment you will be in close proximity to Eastern Brown, Tiger and Red Bellied snakes. All the snakes are wild caught and are used for three days of training for new handlers with Queanbeyan Wildcare who very generously offer a sole session for members of the CBC with a bushwalking context. Wayne Alford will lead the session and he has many years of experience in handling venomous snakes.
This event is especially recommended for anyone who is anxious or scared of snakes. You will see just how wild snakes do react when close to humans and have many myths and legends dispelled. Knowledge and experience gained from this event will enhance your time in the bush. We will also practice Pressure Immobilization Technique First Aid.
Wildcare has strict conditions for attending all their sessions. To be able to participate at this event you must:
a. wear loose fitting, long pants/trousers. Tight fitting jeans or leggings are not acceptable. Wear gaiters if you have them
b. wear shoes or boots that have a solid upper. Not a mesh style such as found in runners/trail runners
c. not use your phone to take pictures when the snakes are out. Your complete attention must be on the snake. I will take photos for everyone to share.
d. have your snake bandage in your pocket. Bandages will be available for sale from the Wildcare crew.
If you have any questions please contact me.
