Day walks from Thredbo

Four daywalks from a lodge in Thredbo. (1) South Ramshead - up in the chairlift, then gently climbing through alpine meadows and occasional short scrub to South Ramshead - dramatic rock formations and views into Victoria. Descend by foot pad to Dead Horse Gap. (Note, this is not the AAWT route.) 8 km, up 250 metres then down 600 metres. Option to end at the Gap (car shuffle) or walk a further 5 km on track back to Thredbo (2) Kangaroo Ridge - up in the chairlift, then north east along the ridgeline. Alpine meadows, scrubby patches. Rock outcrops, a large tarn, and views both east and west. 13 km, two ascents and descents of 100 metres each, the rest gently undulating. (3) Tom Groggin circuit. Half hour drive on sealed road, then a circuit of 11 km, with pleasant forest and riverside scenery. Horse damage in some sections. About 6 km on track and 5 km off track with a mix of sometimes prickly scrub and grassy forest beside the Murray River. One main ascent of 100 m, then undulations mainly under 10 metres each. (4) A choice of (a) On track from the top of the chairlift to Mt Kosciuszko. 13 km return and ascent of around 350 metres - led by Peter C., OR (b) exploratory walk from Dead Horse Gap south along the Great Divide, views into Victoria, 9 km, about half off track, up and down 250 metres and undulations. Return via the AAWT to the Gap. Likely patches of thick scrub, some burnt trees, meadows, rocky outcrops and some intriguing bogs and tarns which we will view from the side.
