Kids' explorer walk in Callum Brae Nature Reserve
Sat 12th Jul 2025
Part-day, Walk, Family
A walk designed for 5 to 8 year-olds in the grassy woodland of Callum Brae Nature Reserve, south of the suburb of Symonston. We will follow interesting gullies, climb a 'cliff' about 1 metre high, find bleached animal bones, balance on logs, toss sticks into a dam and conquer a flat-topped granite boulder. Adults will enjoy the gracious old eucalypts that dot this reserve. The walk is about 3 km in length, half off-track, over a period of 2 to 3 hours including a lunch break. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Families with patient older kids welcome. If you want to bring a younger child, please discuss with the leader at least 24 hours prior to the walk. The terrain includes trip hazards and is not suitable for prams.
Meet at the dirt carpark in Narrabundah Lane, about 500 metres from the junction of Narrabundah Lane and Mugga Lane, at 10.30 am. Wear warm clothes and bring warm hats, gloves, rain jackets just in case, preferably with hoods, and lunch. Long pants and socks that reach above the ankles are highly recommended, to ward off prickly bushes and grass seeds. You may wish to pack spare clothes in the car in case someone slips into a dam. Since you may occasionally need to hold a child's hand while pushing away a branch with your other hand, please carry your gear in backpacks rather than in bags. Bookings are not essential, but you can express interest via Bilby if you wish. If the weather is doubtful on the day, please contact the leader on 0474 507 259 to check if the walk is still on.
