FULL. PNG - Traverse of Mt Giluwe Volcano - 6 Days (4 days walk)- 4367m
Thu 26th Jun 2025
A warm up for the Mt Wilhelm walk or do instead. Retrace my summit walk from 1982 and 2018. In a small group trek through tropical mossy forests, alpine grasslands and past moraine lakes to craggy peaks. We will have a guide but to keep costs down we will be self contained but have no porters. We leave from Sydney by air to Mt Hagen on the first day and drive to a basic lodge at about 2200m. We start trekking proper on the second day by the less well known western approach , spend two nights camping (in our own tents) We take a gradual ascent over two days, remote camping on the way so we can acclimatise easily before summiting. If the weather is clear we will have a magnificent view over PNG. On the descent along the better known North side we follow a long spectacular ridge which can be exposed. We camp in a small cave before descending and driving back to Mt Hagen. From here you an return to Sydney or join the Mt Wilhelm bushwalk.
The Highlands of PNG experience rain throughout the year and it is possible to climb Mount Giluwe at any time throughout the year, however it is typically dryer at this time of year. The only malaria risk will be transiting through Port Moresby. It is possible to travel by air in 6 hours from Sydney all the way to Mt Hagen enabling a Sydney to Sydney trip of just 6 days. . Costs will be shared basis. This is NOT a commercial trip.
A multi day backpacking or base-camping activity.
