Our first (and last) night is in a fancy Mt Hagen lodge (2000m). On Day 2 we drive as far as the road allow s and then walk to the picturesque remote village of Ambullua where we e xperience the traditions and hospitality of the local people. We start t rekking proper on the third day in the rarely visited Jimi Valley. Porte rs and cooks will then assist to carry our load but expect cold weather (maybe snow) and rough campsites. We take a gradual ascent over four day s, remote camping on the way so we can acclimatise easily before summiti ng. If the weather is clear we will have a magnificent view over PNG. On the descent down the better known Simbu side it could be muddy as we pa ss several picturesque lakes one of which we camp beside before a specta cular drive back to Mt Hagen and the relative luxury of the lodge. The H ighlands of PNG experience rain throughout the year and it is possible t o climb Mount Wilhelm at any time throughout the year, however it is typ ically dryer at this time of year. The only malaria risk is will be tran siting through Port Moresby. It is possible to travel by air in 6 hours from Sydney all the way to Mt Hagen enabling a Sydney to Sydney trip of just 8 days. .
