Long Plain and Coolamine Navigation Training
Fri 21st Mar 2025
This weekend trip has a dual purpose. The Australasian Rogaining Championships were run from 15-16 March. The controls that have been set for the event need to be collected. Using the map prepared for the Championships we will assist in collecting remaining controls with the intention of using the exercise for navigation instruction and practice.
Navigation will be by map and compass with participants taking it in turns to practice their navigation. The number of people that can attend will depend on the number of experienced navigators that would like to assist. The intention is to have two inexperienced participants with each experienced navigator with people navigating alternate legs. However, other arrangements may be needed if there are insufficient experienced leaders. There will be opportunities to collect controls at night for those that are interested in practicing night navigation.
The vegetation varies from open grassland to moderately dense forest and the terrain from flat plains to steep hills. Most of the walking will be off-track.
We will camp in one of the National Park campsites on both Friday and Saturday night, so we will be doing two day-walks.
There are a number of old cattlemen’s huts as well as Cooleman Caves and Blue Waterholes, and I would hope to visit at least a couple of these locations.
