Canberra Day Long Weekend Canyoning Trip.
Fri 07th Mar 2025
Abseiling, Canyoning
Bruce and Monika are organising a three day canyon trip in the Newnes Plateau area over the Canberra Day Long Weekend.
We'll drive up to the Newnes Plateau from Canberra on Friday at midday (at least 5 hours drive ) to camp at Barcoo Swamp for one night. On Saturday morning early, we'll hike along an old (possibly overgrown) track for 5km to set up a basecamp for 2 nights from where we'll do three canyons as day trips - Heartattack (Saturday), Surefire (Sunday) and Spiral (Monday). If however, we all get to Barcoo early we can go to the trail head and start walking the 5km to a camp. We'll drive back home to Canberra Monday afternoon.
Participants need to have canyoning experience (eg participation in the recent CBC canyon program) and good fitness. They need to organise their own wetsuits and equipment - eg harnesses, helmets, devices, whistle, and safety lines/slings. Equipment hire available through the club or ask the leaders. Given single rope technique will tend to be used - figure of 8 like devices preferred. No ATC descenders please.
Because of the long drive to/from Newnes Plateau, we'll be car-pooling. Around 620km roundtrip, at 45c a km, around $280 a car. The leaders are also charging a rope/tape use fee - $3 per per person per day per rope and $2 per day for any tape/maillons used.
Note that start and finish times do not include travel times to/from Canberra. We'll stop in Taralga for dinner on the way home to Canberra.
A multi day backpacking or base-camping activity.
