Kidman's Hut lost tracks
Mon 14th Aug 2023
A two day walk in the Kidman's Hut area to trace the route of an old track towards the Jagungal Wilderness and a chance test your winter camping gear in hopefully benign conditions. After a long drive to the Gungarlin River Campground via Cooma we walk on a track to Daveys Hut then cross to the Teddy's Creek fire trail and up to Mill Flat. We then leave the track to follow an old route used by vehicles and horses up til the 1970s to climb steeply to a beautiful open plateau at about 1700m. This area has an alpine bog and used to have tracks going in at least four directions. We follow the route probably used to take equipment to the Grey Mare Mine, but only as far as the head of Bulls Peaks Creek. The camp is at Dominics Camp, not marked on maps but probably used by stockmen since the mid 1800s. On the second day we take a quick detour to Kidmans Hut and then return to the cars via footpads and fire trails.
This time last year the area had thin hard snow at higher elevations so snow shoes will not be needed.
