Nattai River, Bungonia Creek and the Shoalhaven car camp

This is a 2 night car camp with 3 day walks. Day 1 - drive to Welby & walk the Box Vale Tramway/Forty Foot Falls/Nattai River circuit (13 k, 431 m up). https://www.visitsouthernhighlands.com.au/operator/box-vale-walk/ for more info on this wonderful walk. Day 2 - walk the Mt Ayre/Shoalhaven River/Red Track Circuit anti-clockwise - a hard 10 km walk with steep ascents & descents. Not for dodgy knees. Exceptionally slippery & loose soil in places. A rope-assisted climb up out of the Red Track. Lots of boulders to clamber through on Bungonia Creek. Day 3 - pack up . Drive 15 to Trestle Track walk down to the Shoalhaven - a wet crossing to explore the old Tolwong Chimneys (approx 10 km & 350 m up).
Good gloves for the cable climb at Boxvale Tramway, gaiters and a pole for the other walks will be useful.

Terrain Information
Steep loose, rocky tracks down into and up again to the Bungonia Creek and Shoalhaven River. Slippery and rainforest style walking over wet logs and rock hopping in the Nattai River. Boulder clambering up over and through in Bungonia Creek.
Transport Information
2 hour drive from Canberra with carpooling according to COVID-19 restrictions. Distance is approximately 540 km round trip. An AWD is preferred for the drive on Day 3 but, if necessary, we can car pool for the short distance required on the Trestle Track Fire Trail entry section.
Accommodation Information
Bungonia Campground Facilities include amenities block with hot showers and flush toilets, communal camp kitchen with gas cooktops, drinking water, free gas/electric barbecues and picnic tables. Camping ground fees apply.
